Bioethics Fellowship

Our two-year fellowship is designed for those seeking a career in bioethics.

Bioethics Fellowship Program

The Alden March Bioethics Institute (AMBI) at Albany Medical College invites applications for a two-year fellowship in clinical ethics. The fellowship aims to prepare candidates seeking a bioethics career in academic institutions, health care settings, and professional or government agencies. Prior bioethics experience may be helpful but is not required. The fellow will be expected to write ethics consultation notes, participate in health care decision meetings with providers and patients, teach medical students, develop an active clinical ethics research project, and serve as an ethics consultant on our on-call rotation after they have received sufficient training.

AMBI was founded in 1993 to support medical ethics education, develop an ethics consultation service in the Albany Medical Health System, and promote high quality scholarly work in bioethics. AMBI’s programs include the Health Care and Society portion of the curriculum for medical students at Albany Medical College, a master’s program in bioethics, and a full-time ethics consultation service at Albany Medical Health System. More information about the institute can be found on AMBI's webpage.

At the end of the fellowship, graduates will have developed advanced skills in:

  • Performing clinical ethics consultation throughout the hospital clinical setting in accordance with the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) core competencies
  • Participating as an ethics representative on an interdisciplinary team of hospital experts reviewing complex cases
  • Attending institutional ethics review committee meetings
  • Conducting research, both individually and collaboratively, on topics in bioethics, leading to publications in academic journals
  • Teaching and facilitating educational sessions in bioethics and related topics to medical students, bioethics graduate students, and health care professionals
