Base Hospital No. 33 Society
The Society celebrates the military service of Albany Medical College physicians, nurses, medical students, and ancillary personnel.
It is named after Base Hospital No. 33, organized in 1917 by a group of doctors and nurses at the Albany Hospital, now called Albany Medical Center, in response to World War I. The unit deployed to Portsmouth, England, where its personnel cared for more than 3,500 service members during the last eight months of the war.
General Hospital No. 33, the World War II “successor” to the Base Hospital, was deployed for 22 months, first in Tunisia, then in Italy. Nearly 33,000 personnel received care, including 7,500 surgical procedures, at General Hospital No. 33 facilities.
The Albany Base Hospital No. 33 Society Endowed Award, established in 2021, supports a graduating Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) student with the highest academic achievement and/or a graduating military veteran.
