The Division of Nephrology at Albany Medical College welcomes your interest in our Nephrology Fellowship programs. We strive to offer a supportive, collegial atmosphere where fellows also gain experience treating complex patients with a wide variety of pathology.

We are part of an extensive Department of Medicine with multiple medical subspecialties, based in a large academic medical center. Our division features extraordinary clinical and research faculty members and uses an array of institutional resources to foster outstanding training in all aspects of nephrology, dialysis, hypertension, and transplantation.

Our primary site for training is Albany Medical Center, a 766-bed tertiary care referral center and Level 1 Trauma Center with more than 100 ICU beds. Albany Medical Center provides state-of-the-art health care for a diverse population spanning 25 counties, while Albany Medical College offers a broad variety of residency and fellowship training programs in multiple surgical and medical specialties. This combination allows our program to offer comprehensive training in ICU nephrology, acute and chronic dialysis therapies (CRRT, HD, PD), electrolyte disorders, and life-threatening glomerular diseases. Further, the availability of on-site renal pathology, interventional radiology, apheresis, rheumatology, cardiology, and POCUS maximizes the educational opportunities for our trainees.

In addition to the two-year program in clinical nephrology, we offer one position each year for the three-year nephrology/critical care medicine fellowship (two years in clinical nephrology plus one year of critical care fellowship training), in collaboration with the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine. By the end of training, the nephrology/critical care medicine fellow is eligible for board certification in both specialties.

My Nephrology fellowship training at Albany Medical Center was a great experience, highly recommend! You are provided with the tools needed to succeed in outpatient clinic, hospital rounds and most importantly in-center and home dialysis facilities, which is essential for a well-rounded nephrologist. Attending teaching and group conferences provided me the tools needed to understand and practice nephrology at the highest standards.”

Nephrology fellowship at Albany Med has been an amazing experience. The wide breadth of pathology we get to learn from is a major strength, but the best part has to be the people. I've found such a supportive, caring, and dedicated group of teachers who have made this learning experience so enjoyable and fun.”
