Welcome to Albany Medical College
Welcome to Albany Medical College's Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM). As the Regional Perinatal Center and main referral center for the northeastern New York State and southwestern Vermont area, here at Albany Medical Center we serve a large and diverse population of medically challenging obstetrical patients, which greatly enhances the educational experience of our fellows. An overarching theme of our fellowship program is the application of evidence-based medicine to all aspects of maternity care.
Our graduates will gain a thorough knowledge of statistics, experimental design and critical appraisal of the literature. Prenatal ultrasounds are a particular focus of our program and will include training in the performance and interpretation of first trimester scans, basic and detailed anatomy ultrasounds, fetal echocardiography, as well as Doppler studies. Fellows will also receive hands-on training in genetic amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), multi-fetal pregnancy reduction, and percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS). Approximately half of the fellow's time will be dedicated to research and completion of a publishable thesis.
The fellow will learn to perform current laboratory methods such as ELISA, electrophoresis, cell culture, PCR, chromatography and electron microscopy as they collaborate with scientists in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at Albany Medical College. There will also be ample opportunities to conduct clinical research during the fellowship. Upon graduation, fellows will have the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to excel as a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist.
Thank you for your interest in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Albany Medical College.
Sincerely,
Craig Zelig, MD
