Message from the Program Director
Started in 1946 by Dr. Eldridge Campbell, the Neurosurgery Residency Program at Albany Medical College is one of the oldest in the country. It is now a component of the Neurosciences Institute at Albany Medical Center, comprised of the Departments of Neurosurgery, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, and Psychiatry. This partnership has facilitated a cross-departmental collaboration based on diseases such as stroke, epilepsy, movement disorders, brain tumors, and spinal disorders.
We offer first-class clinical facilities, including an advanced skull base anatomy microsurgical lab, physicians and scientists with expertise in all neuroscience specialties, and nationally recognized education and research programs. Hallmarks of our residency program include:
- A diverse clinical environment, encompassing the entirety of neurosurgical subspecialties
- Close daily contact between residents and faculty
- Neurosurgical training with excellent operative and didactic components
- A strong social network of residents and a supportive family-like atmosphere
In addition, Albany Medical Center is the region’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, the region’s only Comprehensive Stroke Center designated by the Joint Commission, and a Stroke Center designated by the New York State Department of Health. It's also the only Level 4 Epilepsy Center in the region, providing medical and surgical treatment for adult and pediatric epilepsy and seizure disorders.
The capital of New York, Albany combines the amenities of a vibrant, urban metro region with the warmth and family values of quaint historic neighborhoods. There are beautiful rolling hills with a friendly climate and four distinct seasons. Albany is easily accessible to Montreal, Boston, and New York City, offers an excellent cost of living in safe, family-friendly communities, and has a wide range of cultural and entertainment venues and festivals.
If you are seeking a program with a faculty sincerely interested in the welfare and education of its trainees that combines academic excellence with a supportive and collegial environment, then our Neurosurgery Residency may be the program for you!
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Department of Neurosurgery, I would like to thank you for your interest in our residency training program.
Sincerely,
Matthew Adamo, MD
