Application Requirements

Application through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for PGY-2 positions available for July must be submitted by December 31 of the previous year.

Albany Medical College's Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and meets all requirements of the American Board of Radiology (ABR).

Our program is a four-year training program preceded by a mandatory clinical preliminary or transitional year, or equivalent experience approved by the American Board of Radiology.

We are seeking applicants with competitive USMLE scores, a high level of clinical competence, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently, efficiently, and cooperatively with others.

Fourth year medical students may apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for positions available in July following completion of PGY-1 clinical training, for which separate application is required.

Applicants who have already graduated from medical school should also apply through ERAS and NRMP. International medical school graduates must be certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Only J-1 visas are accepted.

Eligibility Requirements
The following are eligible to apply for our program:

• Graduates of medical schools in the U.S. and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
  • Candidates may be considered who are currently enrolled in foreign medical schools if they are eligible for the Restricted Interim Certificate from ECFMG, issued to students who have passed the Basic Science, Clinical Science, and English examinations and are awaiting the issuance of their medical school diplomas.
• Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the U.S. accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
• Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
  • Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates AND are graduates of schools approved by the New York State Department of Education OR have a full and unrestricted New York State license to practice medicine.
• Graduates of medical schools outside the U.S. who have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.

Graduates from schools outside the U.S. are INELIGIBLE for residency training in New York State IF:
More than 12 weeks of clerkship training (during the third and fourth years of medical school) occurred outside of the country in which the medical school is located UNLESS the New York State Education Department has approved that school's curriculum, as configured. A list of those schools currently approved is available in the GME Department.

In addition, ECFMG certification is required for international medical graduates. Our institution accepts the J-1 visa only. We look for competitive USMLE scores and require three letters of recommendation. Completion of a PGY-1 preliminary/transitional year in an ACGME-accredited program in the U.S. or equivalent experience approved by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) is also required.
