Albany Med Performs First Procedure Since Heart Transplant Program Re-Opened
ALBANY, N.Y., April 18, 2005 - Albany Medical Center announced today that it has performed its first heart transplant procedure since the program was re-opened last November. While the patient was formally listed in critical condition on Monday, this is customary following such a procedure, according to Dr. Edward Philbin, co-director of the Medical Center's Heart Transplant Program and one of the patient's heart transplant cardiologists. "The patient is doing very well," Dr. Philbin stated. The procedure was performed early Sunday morning by the heart transplant team headed up by Dr. Laszlo Fuzesi, the Medical Center's heart transplant surgeon and co-director of the Heart Transplant Program. Dr. Fuzesi is also a member of Capital Cardiology Associates. The patient's other heart transplant cardiologist is Dr. Mohamad El-Zaru of Albany Associates in Cardiology. The procedure lasted from about 2 a.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday. No further details were available due to HIPAA regulations.
