A majority of students enter Albany Medical College through the traditional admissions pathway. Most have completed an undergraduate degree. Others may have pursued graduate degrees and even alternative careers before deciding to apply to medical school.
It’s not surprising that the traditional admission route is so popular. Since majoring in science is not required, this route allows students to investigate other areas of study that appeal to them and, through that exploration, to decide what they truly want to do with their lives, and how best to achieve those goals.
Minimum course requirements include one year of each of the following courses and their respective labs: biology or zoology, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and general physics. Students who have majored in the arts or humanities are considered on an equal basis with science majors, as long as they demonstrate good capabilities in science. Applicants must also take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) no later than August of the year before they hope to enroll at AMC.
In addition to intellectual ability as reflected in academic achievement and MCAT scores, other non-cognitive factors are of equal importance. These include: integrity, maturity, character, motivation, empathy, communication and listening skills, emotional stability and demonstrated interest in patient care.
If you think that you want to become a doctor but do not yet wish to commit to a particular school or program, the traditional admissions pathway is the appropriate choice. It offers you a high degree of flexibility to explore different areas of study as an undergraduate while keeping your options open for applying to medical school. When you are ready to apply, we hope you will consider the Albany Medical College.
