Albany Medical College: VASCULAR NEUROLOGY

The Neurosciences Institute Stroke team is lead by physicians with specialized fellowship training in diagnosis and treatment of stroke. Our faculty is comprised of a wide range ofbackgrounds and interests with many holding dual-certifications or other advanced degrees. In addition to providing hands-on, 24-hour department supervision and teaching, all faculty members share a commitment to creating an atmosphere that is conducive to the advancement of our specialty.

Faculty members also participate in regional and national professional organizations and research endeavors. Many also serve on national committees and organizations dedicated to the growth and development of Vascular Neurology.

NEUROLOGY FACULTY
	Gary L. Bernardini, M.D., PhD Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery Program Director, Vascular Neurology Gary L. Bernardini, MD, PhDm, Director of Stroke and Neurocritical Care, Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery joined Albany Medical Center in January 2000 as the Director of Stroke and Neurocritical Care. He also holds the Edith M. Hellman Endowed Chair in Cerebrovascular Disease. His areas of specialty include neurointensive care management of subarachnoid and intracerebral hemorrhage patients and comprehensive care of ischemic stroke patients including treatment with thrombolytic therapy and secondary prevention therapies. He is a Principal Investigator in multiple clinical trials. He is Co-chair of the American Stroke Association's Capital Region Stroke Taskforce. Dr. Bernardini received his medical degree from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He completed his neurology residency at New York Weill Cornell Medical Center; and his fellowship training in neurocritical care at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He is Board certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology.
	Colum Amory, M.D. Assistant Professor of Neurology Dr. Amory received his medical degree from Albany Medical College. Following an internship at Montefiore Medical Center, he completed his residency training in neurology – and later became chief resident – at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. While there, he also completed a fellowship in stroke. Dr. Amory is board certified in neurology and vascular neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He also serves as an assistant professor at Albany Medical College.
	Jennifer Yanoschak, M.D. Associate Professor of Neurology Jennifer Yanoschak, M.D., is a stroke specialist with a clinical focus in cerebrovascular diseases and neurological intensive care. She is also expert in performing transcranial Dopplers – a procedure that identifies arterial blockages and other vascular diseases in the brain. Dr. Yanoschak received her medical degree from the Medical College of Pennsylvania and completed an internship in internal medicine at Allegheny General Hospital. Her neurology residency was completed at MCP Hahnemann University, where she later became chief resident, followed by her fellowship training in neurological intensive care and cerebrovascular diseases. She is board certified in neurology and vascular neurology.

NEUROSURGERY FACULTY
	Alan Boulos, M.D. *Chief, Division of Neurosurgery* Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiology Dr. Boulos specializes in the surgical and endovascular management of cerebrovascular disorders of the brain and spine including stroke, cerebral aneurysm, carotid and intracranial vessel stenosis, and arteriovenous malformation (AVM). His expertise includes skull-base surgery for brain tumors, such as meningiomas and acoustic neuromas. Dr. Boulos received his medical degree from Albany Medical College. He completed his neurosurgery residency at Albany Medical Center Hospital. Dr. Boulos then completed a fellowship in neuroendovascular surgery at Millard Filmore Hospital in Buffalo, New York. He is the author of numerous publications and has received several grants, including a prestigious one from the American Heart Association to examine medications that protect the brain from stroke. He is board certified in Neurosurgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons.
	Junichi Yamamoto, M.D., Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery Dr. Yamamoto specializes in the surgical and endovascular management of cerebrovascular disorders of the brain and spine. His clinical interests include cerebral aneurysms, carotid disease, stroke and arteriovenous malformations. He completed his neurosurgery residency at Mie University School of Medicine, Tsu-City, MI Japan. Dr. Yamamoto became a Research Fellow at Toshiba Stroke Research Center, SUNY Buffalo followed by an Endovascular Surgery Fellowship at the Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital, SUNY Buffalo. He is board certified by the Japanese Neurosurgical Society.
