A Day In The Life Of A Medicine Pediatric Resident

Medicine-Pediatrics residents immerse themselves into each assigned rotation.  Their reputation for clinical excellence is always well received.  Apart from the time spent in the Latham Medicine/Pediatric Clinic for their continuity patients, they are actively involved in that particular specialty or ward and attend respective teaching conferences.

Rotations
The training in each specialty is intertwined and progressive. Residents switch between departments every two months (i.e., every two rotations). This tempo keeps their knowledge of each specialty fresh and reduces the anxiety associated with switching rotations. It also allows residents to experience both specialties during each season of the year.

The major focus of the internship is learning to take care of hospitalized patients. By the end of the residency, however, the major focus has shifted to the different, more subtle, and more difficult enterprise of caring for outpatients. Residents complete a wide variety of subspecialty rotations that stress the outpatient management of subspecialty problems.

Continuity Practice
All Medicine-Pediatric interns attend continuity practice one afternoon each week.  MedPed residents attend two afternoons a week.  All interns and residents are develop a patient panel of their own.

Conferences
Noon Conference: There are scheduled noon conferences Monday through Friday throughout the curriculum year in both Pediatrics and Internal Medicine.  Pediatric conferences are located in the C6 classroom.  Internal Medicine conferences are held in the ME100 lecture hall.  Conference topics reflect both inpatient and outpatient curricular guidelines.  Conference schedules are posted on New Innovations.

Grand Rounds: Both the Medicine and the Pediatrics Department hold Grand Rounds Presentations.  The Department of Medicine hosts Grand Rounds the second Thursday of every month.  The Department of Pediatrics host their Grand Rounds presentation every Wednesday.  Speakers are a mix of both local and visiting professors.

House staff Meetings: House staff meetings are held on a monthly basis.  Discussion agenda includes issues pertaining to either department or the outpatient practice as well as future upcoming events. Meetings are typically the final Thursday of the month beginning in August through June at Noon.

Summer Lecture Series: Beginning the month of July a 12 week lecture series has been developed to cover a broad range of topics including a focus on elements of critical care.  The topics constitute our core curriculum.

In-Training Examination: A yearly in-service exam is offered by both departments to help evaluate the progress of residents as they develop over the course of 4 years.  Results are then reviewed and discussed with the program director, during semi-annual reviews.
